15 Minutes of Fame

Been missing-in-action for a long time.

A friend of mine started a blog after reading mine and that in turn inspired me to start posting again.

So, I got this news about a casting call happening next to next weekend for "extras" in a movie which is set in Boulder. This movie seems to be some chick-flick starring Jennifer Garner and Timothy Olyphant. ( BTW, Jennifer Garner of "Alias" fame recently married Ben Affleck). The movie folks need young adults to create the "Boulder" look. I was thinking of going there and trying my luck at movies. The idea at first seemed interesting. But, then a thought occured -- "What role would I be playing by being an extra walking down the streets of the Pearl Street Mall? "
Perhaps, my presence in the crowd would give a feel of the cosmopolitan nature of Boulder City -- where people of various nationalities/color/races roam freely. But, do they ? Recent past is a vivid proof of some racial-attacks on Blacks and others. ( CU - Boulder and City of Boulder has taken a serious note of the issue and there have been serious efforts to make Boulder a secular-haven. A long way to go , however. )
Coming back to the movie. So, my presence would only serve the purpose of casting a stereotype Indian/Brown. What about the actor in me. All Indian-origin actors who have acted in any of the Hollywood movie were simply there because the role demanded it. Role demanded some exotic-looking sadhu or snake-charmer or some other stereotype. Even Kal Penn (Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, Where's the party, yaar ! -- fame) has been able to get only those roles where he is there because role demands a South-Asian. Same goes for our Bollywood heroes/heroines. Mallika Sherawat is there in "The Myth" because Jackie needs an Indian Princess. Same story for others --Aishwarya Rai is trying too hard to break into Hollywood and get roles as an actress and not as an Indian-Actress. Let's see.
Some others would be like.. Naseeruddin Shah playing some forgettable role in LXG (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Sean Connery ..Why did he even do that movie.. beats me )
Yeah, but there's this guy who has a very good role in this upcoming movie -- Chocolate Factory starring Johnny Depp.. and and that "Indian-origin" guy is there in this movie coz he is.
So, that's something worth watching. Like a true Indian, we all should watch movies which has Indian stars in them. Make them bankable stars.

Tomorrow, Eminem is performing at Pepsi Center in denver. Am thinking that I should go; but depends on what time I leave work.

piracy

Most new English-language movies are pirated within 48 hours of their release, they say. Indian movies, by comparison, are released in Pakistan's pirate market three days before their legal release in Indian cinemas.
